I'm considering using textboxes or shapes to create some form of form that is filled in from a table of data. Is there any benefit/drawback or fundamental difference in using shapes instead of textboxes for text? When you add text to a shape, does it become a textbox then or what? It seems like the text resides in a TextFrame either way.

TextBoxes are designed to be used to read and write text. Shapes are designed to be static entities, however Shapes can read and write text. It is slightly more difficult to manually write text in a Shape. Shapes probably have more flexibility with updating attributes such as background color.
My personal first choice for this type of application would be a UserForm, due to ease of designing where things go, and ease of data entry/retrieval. However, UserForms generally are not pretty to look at.
