Need help with creating a programmed checklist in excel

I was hoping to make an excel sheet where there is an input cell and once something is inputted into the cell, it searches for it in the spreadsheet and clears the cell containing that. What I had in mind was being able to make a list with stuff like: Study, Sports, Class, Homework, Lunch, Dinner, Shopping... and then after having the list created, instead of searching through the list and deleting something, I wanted to be able to type "Class" and then "Class" under the "To Do" List gets removed from the list. I don't think it would be very difficult, but I really only know about formulas in excel and wouldn't know where to start programming. I do know a little java and I understand limitations such as the need for the exact syntax. Also, if the syntax entered can not be found, I want a message of some sort to pop up and say something like "Could not find". Thank you to anyone who can help.
