Vlookup won't recognize date formats from drop down lists

Hello,

I created a drop down list of dates (cell link to W9) but when a date is selected from the dropdown and I try using the formula +W9 in a different cell (C5), it doesn't recognized what was selected in the drop down list. For example, I selected 01-09-16 in the drop down and in C5 it to it's showing up as 19-02-00. In the vlookup formula I used W9 in it's returning #N/A. Hopefully this is clear. Please help it's driving me nuts. Maybe there is a different way of creating the drop down (I used the developer and insert combo box to do the drop down.

I figured it out by defining name of cell list range and then going to where I wanted it and hitting Data validation
