Just save as from within the software and choose the .xls extension from the drop-down menu.

FILE/SAVE AS/SAVE AS TYPE Excel 97-2003.
However many formulae will not work on 2003. Any formulae with whole column references, SUMIFS and COUNTIFS (I think...), etc, etc. You will have fewer rows/columns, fewer levels of nesting , etc.

To wit, once converted, any non-compliant formulae will have the prefix .xln_ (I think that's right) or will show a #NAME? error (where a function is not available).
It's actually _xlfn.

Although that could have changed in the OP's Excel 20076 version.
I did wonder whether we were dealing with a time traveller myself, but then put it down to something more mundane like large fingers on a small keyboard ...
