excel add in file (.xla) not opening

I have an excel file with an extension of .xla sent by someone. I downloaded and saved it in my folder. However when I try to open it (double click), instead showing one of the sheets, it takes me to a window where a file will be created or opened. I select/click the file name again and then it shows me an empty screen without cells and almost all ribbons greyed out. Has anyone experienced such a case? Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you. I tried but am lost with the direction. I couldn't find the plus sign next to the listing. Is it in vba editor or file --> option?

Did you try put this xla (old format of excel add-in) into plugins folder then turn it on on Developer / Excel Add-ins tab and use it in excel?

Can you be more specific? Step by step? This is the first time I have to deal with the add in file. Thank you for your patience

right click and copy this xla
go to the ribbon - Developer tab
select Excel Add-ins
you;ll see new window: Add-ins
select Browse
inside right click and select paste
ok
again click on Excel Add-in and check your add-in (if it exist on the list)
if it doesn't exist it means it is not compatible with your version of Excel or bit version (32 or 64)

or if you don't see it on the list try close and re-open excel

Thanks. I see them now. It might be because I rebooted my computer today or I don't know how I missed seeing the forms/modules from the addin file yesterday
