fill order, given the different raw goods lengths

    Hello everyone,

I have raw goods that come into my plant in lengths of 20' and 24'.

Each day I need to cut the raw goods into pieces to fulfill an order.

For example, today I needed the following quantities and lengths...

    2 ea. 6'
    1 ea. 7'
    4 ea. 8'
    10 ea. 2'

I am trying to find a way for excel to fulfill this order, given the raw goods lengths, while minimizing the amount of waste. Basically, I want excell to tell me how many raw goods pieces I need to pull and what combination of cuts would lead to the least amount of leftover.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Help using excel to solve manufacturing problem

Can you attach a sample workbook mocking-up what you would expect as a result?

Go Advanced -> Manage Attachments -> Upload

Also if there is some manual working or formula that you currently do to get the results that would help too.

Re: Help using excel to solve manufacturing problem

I can mock something up tomorrow but I am open to any suggestions.

its one of those problems where I know there has to be a solution but I am not even sure where to start.

Currently, we look at the list of cuts we have to make each day and try to do some quick math to see then efficient way to make the cuts, however, at the end of each day we end up with a ton of waste

Is any length lost due to cuts?

    Hi, welcome to the forum

Please take a moment to read the forum rules and then amend your thread title to something descriptive of your problem - not what you think the answer might be. (think google search terms?). Once you have done this please send me a PM and I will remove this request. (Also, include a link to your thread - copy from the address bar)

Many members search our previous posts, and thread titles play a big part of the search. I doubt anybody would do a search based on your title?

To change a Title on your post, click EDIT POST then Go Advanced and change your title, if 2 days have passed ask a moderator to do it for you.

(note: this change is not optional )

(maybe something like "fill order, given the different raw goods lengths")

On a side note, I have a feeling you would be better served with a dedicated Cut List Program - there a number of free versions on-line.

    I googled "wood cut list"

These look interesting (have not tried them though)
