no files are opening

That's odd - they do for me If the message box shows a number then the files have definitely been opened.

Try stepping through the code by pressing F8 from anywhere within the macro to see what each line does. Maybe the Excel macro setting doesn't allow for macros to automatically run on opening without having pressed Enable Content beforehand.
