Show Preview/thumbnail of a linked photo/JPG via network on mouse hover (parts list)

Hello -

I have a large list of machinery parts that all have at least one (and in some cases two or three) linked photo/s assigned to each. I'd like to be able for other users of the sheet to hover over the linked network path and see a preview of the part in question. These are linked JPG images from elsewhere on a server.

I'm aware of the 'filled comment box' to allow this, but I have about 600 images and don't want to tackle it one-by-one due to time constraints. Is there any way this could be done? I know it can be set up to preview online photos, i.e via a URL, but all these images have a file///\\network-01\folder\photos type address location??

Any help is appreciated. VBA is probably required but would like a reasonably simple solution if poss as the sheet and data in it is likely to grow quickly.

Hi Stuart,

I have created an attachment that shows how the adding an image to a comment box can be automated.
The file downloads an online image and saves it in the Temp folder - it then points the comment box to that image - the image is then deleted from the Temp folder. You are left with a bunch of online image paths with a comment for the picture that was captured. You can play with the ScaleImage value (currently 4) to make the images smaller or larger.

Just as an FYI the link: https://picsum.photos/200 will load a random image, these links can be relaced with real online file links.

Unfortunately it is saying that the file's code must be updated to work on 64 bit systems.

Something to do with a ‘Declare function’? It highlights the declare term in the VBA when it errors...

I can get it to work in its original incarnation and add in my own links and pictures too and it works a treat, however as soon as I try and transfer the module and references into the actual sheet I need it for, it errors saying it can't find 'PicturePath' in the module box. "CommentBox.Shape.Fill.UserPicture PicturePath " Run-time error, the specified file wasn't found.

I don't even know how you could change this path? As it will be used by different users, the temp file needs to be basic and/or allow for flexibility and not error? It directs to AppData folder at the mo but we might have permissions issues etc for some folders?

That means the URLs for the images you provided are incorrect.

You could try putting your links into my spreadsheet and see if you get the error - if you do then it will be the link that is at fault as @PrizeGotti stated above. You can also put the link into a web browser - if it does not download or load a picture the it is an issue.

As for the Temp folder - you can hard code that to any folder of your choice that all the users do have access to.

Thanks, I'll give it a go - At the moment the links are part of a formula, whereas I used hard absolute text before in the main sheet (which did work), so I'll adapt the same
