Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean? At first I thought it was true if there was only one letter different in the words however the example you gave the 4th and 6th letters are different? Can you give a more detailed breakdown with more examples please?
If someone has helped you then please add to their Reputation
The 4th letter are different , it was a typo
DIA(C)ONAL
DIA(D)ONAL
Re attached same file with the typo corrected

and what about DIAGONAL? should that also be highlighted on Row1? or create a new row?
Yes Diagonal too at E1 and so on
Last edited by makinmomb; 09-15-2022 at 08:45 AM. Reason: diagonal
Do very not expect any help without any logic elaboration like any Excel forum expects for ...
will there be patterns like this ??
ANNEALED
BALADINE
BARROWS
DEDALIAN
DENTALIA
DIACONAL
DIADONAL
DIAGONAL
MARROWS
NAILBEAD
NAILHEAD
NARROWS
RAILHEAD
SIALIDAN
If so, then very heavy processing as all 44k words have to be repeatedly examied.

If that takes care of your original question, please select Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED.
Yes J Topley , u got me correct
Also the thread says "similar by 1 consonant" does that mean that
READ
REED
and
FRIED
FREED
Do not match?
no pjwhitfield , , it must be a consonant
Thanks,
Hopefully one final question, are all words the same length? if not, does it also match if the word has been pluralised?
eg
DIAGONAL
DIAGONALS
Words are of one length but i will run it for SEVEN LETTERS WORDS and EIGHT SEPERATEDLY
ok, so I have a working code here however hopefully this is my last question:
If we take the list John gave earlier:
ANNEALED
BALADINE
BARROWS
DEDALIAN
DENTALIA
DIACONAL
DIADONAL
DIAGONAL
MARROWS
NAILBEAD
NAILHEAD
NARROWS
RAILHEAD
SIALIDAN
This will among others match
BARROWS MARROWS NARROWS
when it does the BARROWS row,
the code then moves on and at some stage starts comparing MARROWS with the words after it. Do you want it to produce the following?
MARROWS NARROWS
or should it be
MARROWS NARROWS BARROWS
or frankly should it not do anything for these 3 words as all 3 were already highlighted when it did BARROWS?
I want it to do BARROWS MARROWS NARROWs , ALPHA order
Here is a more word to do the test , the first 3,ooo words out of the total 44,444
It should then go transpose on the row of BARROWS
Try

John getting run time error 9 on 44,444 rows
Macro speed is crazy , at flash seconds on the 3,ooo
I would need the file to check out the error: ZIP it
Dim arr(1 To 1000, 1 To 50)
[C1].Resize(1000, 20).ClearContents
maybe change 1000 to 10000 ?

bsalv it did not work my end
with the modification it works for me John and is quicker than i thought it would be!
Before I close the thread . i need the part two of the macro which deletes past tense and plurals that is ending es and ed , first the version of the working macro
Examples of removes would be these , which are too obvious
ACTIONED ACTIONER
ADONISED ADONISES
These kind too it should trim
NOTIFIED NOTIFIER NOTIFIES
V2.0, i get more similar words then JohnTopley,
my macro takes 30 sec for 3.000 words
bsalv thank you , we wait John Macro to see what it does

bsalv the presentation is good , can u modify the same macro to trim words as below
NOTIFIED NOTIFIER NOTIFIES
@Bslav: under 4 secs for $40K+ : volume to large too comment on diiferences in results!!! Your VBA much better than mine
See attached re "ED"/"ES" removal
Waiting for Bsal macro to finish the actual file to test what John Macro does
Will close thread , John small edit though also dont need these , Thank you again to both of you
ABSOLVER ABSOLVES

Hello.
I leave you another variant in which you are informed of the row in which the similar words are found.

pjw i have left office , will report the speed of your macro , though the presentation of your prior copy was better
"Waiting for Bsal macro to finish ..."
I suppose the problem is solved and i don't have to look anymore
