Excel calendar workbook: How to stop text from copying across different years

I downloaded a calendar template from Microsoft that has an up/down arrow which changes the year. Each tab represents a different month within each year. When I click on January 8, 2024 to add text to that cell, the text populates to the corresponding date in all of the following years (eg: January 6, 2025). How do I stop this from happening so each year has it's own data?

    TIA!

I think this file has been put together so that you use it like a paper calendar, i.e. you write an event on a particular date and there it stays. If you want a calendar for the next year then you change the year and save the (blank) file for that year.

To do what you are describing is to imply that you store the data somewhere else (in another sheet) for all years, and then display the appropriate data in the date cell as chosen by the year. That is a different concept than how the file has been designed, although it is possible.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I'm not sure how to do what your are suggesting. When I enter data in a cell (month/day), it copies to the following years.

The data doesn't get copied to anywhere else. Where you have put "test" in cell C8, representing 8th January 2024, it stays there, and when you change the year in the Annual sheet all the dates get changed, but the test data remains where it was (still in cell C8, but now labelled as 6th January 2025).

To do what you described above would need another sheet (let's call it INPUT) where you would record the date and description of each event in any order. It would also require a formula in each day cell which looked to see if there was an entry in the INPUT sheet for that date and to display the activity if there is one. If you changed the year there would not be an entry for that date, so nothing would be displayed.

The file you have is not set up to do that.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Excel calendar workbook: How to stop text from copying across different years

I've just set this up for you to show how it can be achieved. I've created a new sheet called INPUT, where you can record what you want to go onto the monthly calendar sheets - just date and the text.

In the sheet for January I've set up this formula in cell B8 for January:

    =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(B7,INPUT!$A:$B,2,0),"")

and copied this across for that week. I've also given it a coloured background for clarity.

You can see that the dummy entries for 2024 are displayed. Change the year in the ANNUAL sheet and then you will find that the display for January gets changed automatically.

I've only put the formulae in for that week in January, so you will need to copy this to all the other weeks (and all the other monthly sheets) for it to work for the year.

    Hope this helps.

Well, that's what we are here for - you still have quite a bit of work to do, though.

If that takes care of your original question, please take a moment to select Thread Tools from the pale grey menu above and to the right of your first post in this thread, and mark the thread as SOLVED.

Also, since you are relatively new to the forum, you might like to know that you can directly thank those who have helped you by clicking on the small "star" icon located in the lower left corner of a post that you have found to be helpful (not just in this thread - for any post that has helped you). This also adds to the reputation of the poster (the small green bars in the poster's profile).
