Moving data from one worksheet to another and back.

HI all, In the attached workbook I've just created a new worksheet "Enter" in which I've placed a list in B1 and working off that, I'd like whatever is placed in column B3:B20 to be replicated on the Master sheet in the row with the same name as in B1. So for an example I've put Adams. Brian in B1 and I'd like B3 to copy over to Master E4, B4 to G4, C4 to I4, and so on. By doing this points will show up on the Master page in adjacent cells and I'd like these to be shown in Column C on the enter page, so F4 on the Master page to C3 on the enter page, H4 to C4, J4 to C5, I4 to D5, and so on. All of course relates to whosoever is referenced from the list in B1, so maybe INDEX and MATCH?

The reason for all this is

    A) My eyesight isn't as good as it used to be and I have to do this at events on a small laptop.
    B) There's a lot of workings out on the Master sheet and scores are entered every other column and it it easy to make an unknown error, maybe deleting a formula.
    C) Its a competition and when entering on the Master sheet as I normally have done in the past there are a lot of prying eyes looking over my shoulder, seeing who is winning, etc.
This spoils the presentation somewhat for everybody, it would be nicer coming as a complete surprise. (Even to me)

Many thanks for any help, its much appreciated. I'm pretty sure I could do it myself but it would almost certainly be long winded with excessive formula and now I have upgraded to Excel2021 there are probably better functions to use that I haven't used yet. This will give me an opportunity to learn.

You can't do this without VBA - shall I move the thread for you?

Well yes, thank you Ali. Have to say that's surprised me, I actually thought I could probably do it but it would have ben long winded. Much obliged.

No. You cannot WRITE data to another worksheet using a formula. You can only READ data with a formula.

Yeah, youre right of course. As soon as you change the name all the other bits would disappear.

That's it exactly. I've moved the thread, anyway.

Thank you for that. I tried to copy over the code to the original workbook but it gave me a error 9 message, however I can use the downloaded book.

As for column C on the enter sheet, I guess I could copy over the formula to show the points until I change the name.

Do I press upgrade after each players scores are entered?

Re: Moving data from one worksheet to another and back.

Thanks John, I can use the download as an original, which I guess will save me setting the named ranges. This will really improve my event day experience, the Masters page was quite delicate.

I create a new workbook for each event so its not a problem.

One further question if I might ask. Is it possible for Column B to clear once you select another name? Otherwise you're putting one number on top of another and I'd imagine that could easily lead to a mistake.

I'm typing in off a scorecard, usually 3 numbers at a time and its easy to lose track of where you are, especially as I am often interrupted mid flow, people bringing in more cards, questions, etc. .

I think I've just found and solved another problem. Sometimes you get a score queried, players cards can disagree with each other or scores are challenged. Obviously if I select a name for a second time then all the scores would disappear, however I can get round that by changing an individual score on one hole on the Master Sheet. That seems to work okay.

John, if you open the workbook, put three scores in for Batterbee, then click on the next name, Baxter, there are no scores shown for Jeff Batterbee but the scores you put in for Batterbee are shown by Baxter?

It looks like that's the same for all names. Bennett, Bromley has the same flaw.

Re: Moving data from one worksheet to another and back.

Yes, its definitely not working correctly John.

If you open the workbook and put a 4 in each cell for Brian Adams, then click on Jeff Batterbee, the 4's all appear under Batterbee.

Then if you enter a series of 5 under Batterbee, click on Bennett, all the 5's go to Bennett.

Sadly maybe this is a step too far, I don't like to think you keep wasting your valuable time on me. Also I've realised if something did go wrong on the day of the event, I'd have no idea how to put it right, when I can often work out what's gone wrong when using a formula a formula.

Try attached: Selection of name clears previous data, UPDATE button adds to MASTER

You are not wasting my time: errors are at my end so I need to get this right!

Re: Moving data from one worksheet to another and back.

I think you've nailed it John. I actually prefer the update button, gives me a chance to check the score against what the player is claiming. I'll keep this copy as my Master now.

Thanks so much, I am full of admiration for people like yourself. I have managed to add some VBA to workbooks but it is all very simple stuff like sorting.

Have a good nights rest. I'll test it extensively tomorrow but I think we've got it.
