    Make a work book readonly on opening?

    Hi guys,

    I have a sheet which is basically a tool that you populate to generate documents based on word templates. In other words it just needs to be filled in and a macro run, changes never need to be saved by standard users and if they could do that they'd muck it up... as usual - for that reason the sheet is read-only. However through macros it would be nice if they could add information like staff members etc.

    So, my question is, on opening a workbook could a macro make it "read only", then other macros remove this protection to update certain cells?

    Hi Chris,

    The way I would do that would not use macros at all.

    I would

    1. Highlight the cells which you DO want to be editable
    2. Right Click -> Format Cells
    3. Protection -> uncheck the locked box

    Then

    1. Tools -> Protection -> Protect Sheet

    This should mean that only the cells you have 'unlocked' can be edited by the user.

    May be an obvious answer, if it is I apologise!

    Hey there, that would be a great solution, unfortunately I have already implemented protection accross the sheet to prevent users editing things they shouldn't but allowing them to edit the cells they should fill out.

    The reason that it is read only is so that once they fill out the sheet the details that they entered are not saved when it is used again (it also avoids having the sheet only usable by one person). I think I may have some problems with this!

    If the sheet is saved as read only in the save as options recommeded read only and having a password to modify, the sheet can still have data added to it, but the individual would not be able to save the changes?

    Or am I missing something?

    Regards
