Scanning into Excel

I tried to cheat and record a macro of Insert-Picture-From Scanner, but it does not record anything. I then did some searching and found these two suggesstions, and I attached them to two command buttons in a test workbook:

Both return:
Method 'Execute' of object'_CommandBarButton' failed.

The scanner is TWAIN compliant - if that matters. and using Excel 2003.

I would also, once I get this going, like the scans to take up as little space as possible-i.e. they can be scanned in b&w, what is the best format to save them in? and can all that (format, size, etc.) be programmed with VBA?
