macros running sloowly. excessive file size

i have a problem with running macros ive written in vba in excel. for some reason over time they seem to get slower and slower and some are so slow they virtally crash the system. for example, one of my macros creates a new workbook, after the macro completes there is only one worksheet in the workbook and that worksheet has only about 40 lines of data however when this workbook is saved the size of it ends up being over 5MB. it should be more like about 20KB so something is grossly increasing the file size. only clue i seem to have is that on the worksheet if i click in column 1 there seems to be an autoshape there named linkalert-icon-1 and no matter how many times i delete it, it remains - making me think there could be hundreds or thousands of them on top of eachother and causing the large file size. another thing is that that i copy a large amount of original data from a program that outputs to firefox. i then do a copy paste to get all the data into excel and that is essentially my raw data that my macros do work on. any suggestions

Look in Book.xlt (in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\XLStart\ for Excel 2003 with XP) and see if there are shapes in there.

    xlstart

hi shg. have done that and no shapes in there. book.xlt is only 19kb size so dont think the problem is originating from there.

    Hello lawrencef,

Curious problem. Can you post a copy of the workbook for review?

    Sincerely,

Is it worth it to run this macro from xld?
It should delete the shapes in your sheet.

I'd be inclined to find out where the shapes are coming from, rather than dealing with the results.

IMHO, would it help if you got rid of all the shapes, go in a site and find them again you would know where they originate from? You could then possibly take remedial action. This is just my way of thinking shg and I might be totally wrong.
    Regards.
