Hey everyone... when I'm working in a fairly large ss excel sometimes seemingly randomly won't recognize an equals sign when I type it in to start a new formula. I type any formula preceded by an equals sign and rather than calculating the result of the formula excel will simply display the formula in the cell... as an example if I typed "=2+2" into a cell rather than display "4" excel will display "=2+2". Thank you in advance for any help on this problem.
Format > Cells, change the format to something other than Text.

The cell is formatted to Text when you enter the formula... you should ensure going forward they are set to General before entering the formula.
To rectify you have a few options...
1 - highlight specific formula cell, set format to General, press F2 and hit ENTER
2 - highlight all affected cells, run Edit -> Replace -> Replace: = With: =
