Insert a 'space' between data in a cell...?

    Hey all,

Would some kind soul point me in the right direction to solve my query please?!

I'm trying to insert a 'space' after the second character/number in a cell.

    I.e 123456 should become 12 3456

I have tried =LEFT(A1,2)&" " but this just deletes all data after the space. I've also tried =MID(A1,2)&" " but this makes excel very angry.....

    Please help!

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
supposing your strings always have the same length, try
    =left(a1,2)&" "&right(a1,4)

    Hi all,

My appolgies for the duplicate posting - I'm new to excel and I wasn't sure if this was a general topic question OR a programing question....

arthurb QUOTE: supposing your strings always have the same length, try
    =left(a1,2)&" "&right(a1,4)

my strings are of different lengths... example: 123456, 124d, aa122223 etc

    Then try this
