    novice needing help on formula

This is probably very simple to you guys, but any help greatly appreciated.
I dont know the technical term, so cant look up how to do this....here we go.
I have a sheet with 3 columns of data
column 1 is date as mmm yy( three years)
    column 2 is a number
    column 3 is a number.

At the bottom of column 3 I want to create 3 cells with subtotals of column 3 for each of 3 years, ie 2010, 11 and 12....
my mind is trying to think "conditional" ie if a cell in column one contains "10", ie year, regardless of month, then include the value in column 3 in same row, ie A1 is date A3 is value, as part of the sum, ie sub total.....is this as clear as mud??????
