You can just use undo unless you are sorting with a macro which clears the undo stack (in versions up to 2003 anyway and 2007 as well I think).
One way to preserve the order of a list would be to add a helper column to the original list with records numbers 1,2,3 in it and you would then be able to return the list to the original order at any point by sorting on that.

yea, i am using a macro... so the only way to undo a sort is with a helper column? and there is no other way?
If the data was not sorted in any logical order in the first place and for whatever reason you needed to return it to the original order after sorting then it's probably the method I'd use. There are probably other ways but it's simple and effective.

ok nevermind, i pasted the original data, then cut it after the macro is run, so i preserve the original data
