Excel as an accounting system

I'd like to create my own accounting system for small businesses. I know excel won't be robust enough. Does anyone have any suggestions for what programming software i can use that i could integrate with excel?

I use Excel for business accounting, but I've developed my system over several years.

Most accounting packages export to Excel, why do you need a programming package
