Question how to cause Excel to find other documents based on metadata

I'm not even sure if this is possible...

Within SharePoint I would like to tag documents with various metadata (customer ID, product type, etc). I have an excel spreadsheet with a userform where a user can enter the same information as it relates to a sales order.

(OK now forget anything about SharePoint - just focus on: I have documents with metadata which match values in Excel ranges).

What I would like to do is take the information entered by the user and have excel return the path, or a link to... some way to create a virtual sort of 'attachment' to the documents by looking up the metadata.

Is there any way to do this?!

Alternately... if someone else has a better idea for how to create the appearance of an attached document to an excel (or access) record, I'm all ears. The end goal should be: a way to look up an order number [for example] and return the documents associated with that order.

    Thanks!!

    KH
