Capture variable from part of cell formula

I need to capture just the criteria within the forumla below to use as a variable. In turn I want to put that variable within another =DCOUNT formula via VB. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this if it is even possible?

    =DCOUNT(main_db!$B$8:$B$15,"twentythree",main_db!A1:A2)

    Hello tbyrd1084,

    Welcome to the Forum!

If you create a named range for main_db!A1:A2 then you can use it as a variable in any formula. If you later change the named range, you don't have to edit your formulae.
    Sincerely,
