Counting multiple things

I have a spreadsheet set up like this
*column A=Unit name (i.e. 113th Cav, 217th Eng)
*column B=Cleared, Not Clear, or N/A

I need to count the number of people in a certain unit that have a Cleared or Not Clear by their name, but not the ones that have an N/A by their names. I tried the countifs, but that would require them to have a Cleared and Not clear to get counted. I know you can do it with the OR function, but I'm not too sure on how to use that yet.
