Moving data between two workbook with one a variable name

Hello. I am trying to marry up MLS and tax data. I have the formulas to do that based on a common denominator, but the data sets are in two workbooks. The MLS data is always in the same named wb, but the tax data can be one of many open books. The parts of the process that I don't know how to do are: to read the name of the appropriate tax book from a cell (that I select from a drop down) and then activate that wb (to extract certain records). Thanks ahead of time.

Well th3 key to accessing remote data from selected workbooks based upon a cell value is the INDIRECT function that works like a dream and fits in a formula (so no VB for most cases). Indirect takes a single parameter that gives the name of a target cell whose value is returned to the formula containing the indirect. If you've not seen direct before, this example builds up to a complex use form the simplest:Attachment 192862. This provides data for a multi workbook example.Attachment 192863.

Of course there is a VBA solution too, but from what you've said ou may manage with formulas.

without seeing what you are working with, I would suggest that you play around with incorporating the file name (from you're drop-down) into an indirect() function
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you
