colour row based on column criteria ,populated by numbers or blank

hi
I have a spreadsheet that uses columns from a to m ,I want to highlight all rows based on what value column I holds ,it will be a barcode with 2,3,4 or 5 numbers
or empty,i have sheet code to do the empty code but can not get my head round how I look for a number that could be 2,3.4,or 5 digits long,have used "" for empty
and "****" for populated but just not sure where to go,have read so many threads my heads spinning,any pointers as to which direction I need to be would be good

it does not matter what colour they are but as I add others would like them to colour straight away
hope this helps,tried conditional formatting before but you have to keep selecting if you extend the sheet, adding more entries

if you use conditional formatting don't you select the range on the sheet then use formatting,if you put more rows on your sheet don't you have to select the sheet including the extra rows ,then format again,thats what I thought
presume vba would include extra rows and colour them as you write them,maybe

you can click arrow on top left and then format

ihave got cell I highlighted but can not seem to get the rest of the corresponding row to highlight ,any ideas

solved this myself with con formatting,enter no in cell I,or date last month in j or enter no greater than 20 in m, hope it helps someone else
