Data Validation Alert with Formula

Hi.

I am aware that the alert box with data validation does not work if it contains a formula. (ie. alert box appearing if a formula turns up a number greater than 8).

Is there a way around this or another way to get a pop up box if the formula calculates a number greater than 8?!?
