Can Excel be used with a barcode scanner to track inventory?

I work with a non-profit that needs to keep track of inventory on hand. The charity wants to use a barcode scanner to track 7 different items by scanning each item individually as they come in, and having the count of each item reflected on the spreadsheet. Additionally, we would need to scan them as they go out. The idea being that we would have a daily account of how much product we have on hand.

There will be no money exchanged at all. All we need is a way to scan item x, and to know how many of item x we have at any given time. Is there a simple, cheap way to do this?
