Hi all,

I tried my very best to come to a conclusion myself, but it seems that my knowledge is way too limited to come to a conclusion on my own. I have no history in coding whatsoever.

I would like to find a way to create a macro or anything else like it that can be used to import data from a 10-K of a company. My goal is the following: creating a code to find specific financial data (about 22 data) in a 10-K from a specific year. Then alter this code to look for the exact same data in 9 other years (creating a 10 year average). On top, I want to be able to do minor changes to the code so I can insert another website with the 10-K of another company to look for the exact same data. So I want to know how I can make a code manually for one year, apply the same code for the other years and then use the codes I created to apply them to another firm.

I am a student who is extremely interested in how to valuate companies, now I want to learn this on my own without any classes (I have read tons on the subject). Now in order to do valuation, I always like hours on manually looking up and inserting those data from a 10-K. That's why I am looking to make this process as easy, fast and efficient as possible as right now it takes hours to insert the data which only allows me to do 1-2 valuations per day. A code would allow me to do a lot more valuations and speed up my learning.

I'll share what I have tried already. I looked up XBRLAnalyst and alternatives, but found it was extremely hard to comprehend for a lay. Then I looked on google all over the place, and I saw a post here for beginners. I almost jumped up as I thought I had found a solution as someone proposed to use the "Record"-tool under the "Development"-ribbon. Now I tried doing that, and came to two conclusions: when I try to edit the macro, I see nothing but "Macro2" and for the rest there is nothing. The other part of the conclusion is that I wonder to what extend a macro can be edited into a code that will achieve the goals I mentioned in my first paragraph.

To give a short summary:
- I'd like to know how to write a code to take specific financial data from 10-K filings on the SEC website and import it in specific sells in excel
- I'd like to use that code for all 10 years I want to apply it by changing the year in the code
- I'd like to use that code for another company by changing the website reference in the code

I'll be honest, this is my idea but I honestly am not sure this is even possible because I have looked for hours on the internet but seem to fail to find a tutorail video, youtube video or any other guide on the matter.

I appreciate any feedback, ideas or comments (as long as they are constructive).

If you have any questions or need any clarifications, do ask because I want to ask my question as clearly as possible (which I hope I did).

Thank you very much for reading, sorry for any ignorance regarding excel in this post as maybe there is a simple solution to this but I honestly could not find anything. Thank you to everyone trying to help me out!
