How to count number of specific words in a spreadsheet

So I want to count the number of members, number of trialists, number of inactive people and number of inactive people in the table on the right, automatically when I type someone's name into the roster. How do I start this?

I removede the : in the cells J13 and J14

Advice: don't work with merged cells, since you get in trouble with it sooner or later.

I might have forgotten one of them.....
For total members, if you want it to count total of members that have "Members" in column C (Status) then place this in K12

Not sure if you can use the sum of L13 through L15 in your sample as Trialist and Active/Inactive can be counted more than once as a member so the total of 31 should be 21 as there are only 21 members on the list.
