Sorting numbers in Excel in mac

    Hi,

I am new to Mac OS X. When I try to sort numbers using Excel ( 15.17 version), there is an option to sort ascending and descending , but it does not sort properly.

    For example,

0.77 , 1.2, 11.25 , 9.99 are the numbers and ascending order sorts the numbers

as 9.99, 11.25,1.25 , 0.77. Tried changing the column format to number instead of general still the same.

I MS excel in windows, this works fine. any help how to achieve this sorting or is Excel in mac limited in functionality.

    Regards,
    Palani

It is probably formated as Text

You can convert it to numbers by multiplying per 1 or just changing the cell format

Try to Sum the range and check if it results in an error

If the answer is Yes, the problem is that

    Hi, welcoem to the forum

Changing the cell format does not changethe underlying data, and it sounds like your numbers are actually text that looks like a niumber - test with =ISNUMBER(cell-Ref) FALSE means ity is text and not a number/value. You will then need to convert it a number

    Hi ,

Yes it is correct , the cells remain as text. I found a way to display them as numbers. But still some cells show up as text, rest of the cells
are showing as numbers. Why would that happen ? I am downloading this file from tableau application.

Don't click the column letter before sorting. If you do, the sort will be applied only to the contents of the column, not the entire table or data range.
