race results RANK HELP

Hi all. I'm racking my brain trying to come up with the formula for this. This is for a race where at any time we can print a list of the running order even if the competitors are on different laps. I understand the basic rank function but when the rank goes back up the list I can't figure out how to assign rank. example attached:

if you're open to the idea, it would be simplest to store a key - e.g.

J3: =LOOKUP(9.99E+307,B3:H3,COLUMN(B3:H3)*100+100-B3:H3)
copied down

then, for RANK

I3: =RANK($J3,$J$3:$J$11)
copied down
