Excel 2011 Mac using 100% to perform simple tasks then crash.

    Hi there,

I'm ******* my hair out in the past few days. Performing simple tasks like paste or clear contents is causing Excel to use 100% of the CPU and then hang causing me to force quit. I have looked into a few things online such as ensuring there aren't unnecessary formula copied down. The only code in the open sheet (which I am working on) is very simple and been in place for a long time with no issues. I don't really know what to do...

I've reinstalled the software which seems to have brought about some improvement. i.e. it no longer crashed on simple commands. However, it does not take an extremely long time to save things, etc. The default printer is just my printer (HP470) connected on the network.

Oh and I have calc set to manual already. And the spec is a 2012 iMac 8GB RAM. And all software is up to date...

actually problem not resolved. Seems to either be ok but take ages to save and be generally slow. Or just hang when paste a simple cell. grrrrrrr

are you running any AV software? do you have a different printer you can set as default?

No AV and I've deleted the printer completely. Something is still killing it. Doesn't matter what sheet I open it dies. I've removed pretty much all conditional formatting. Some sheets are big and have lots of array formula but up until a couple of weeks ago I've been using them with no problem at all in this way.

is it only one workbook that has the problem or all of them?

all of them. I've broken all the links between them now too to see if that was the issue. And it wasn't. It hangs and hangs and hangs if I clear contents of one cell that simply contains one letter of text. It's doing my absolute head in.
