Want forced decimals

I want to be able to type: 1400 and get: 14.00

or type 12345 and get 123.45 etc.

It is just to avoid having to enter a decimal every time. This is for a simple accounting spreadsheet so I do need decimals for the cents.

I've seen several threads on this forum from people who want to stop this, and solutions, but the options to fix it are perhaps for Windows and not available. Or because I'm doing this on an older machine.

This is for a Mac 10.4.11 and Excell 2004. Getting a bit on in years, I know.

Thank you.

Re: Want forced decimals

I have 2000/2003 at home, but am at work right now (2007). If no-one has offered a suggestion in the next few hours, I will take a look again when I get home.

In 2007 its...
"excel options/advanced/editing options/automatically insert decimamal point
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Didn't know there was a 2004 and if the mac version is different...would imagine it be same idea as MS EXCEL 2003

• From the Menu bar select TOOLS >> OPTIONS
• Choose the EDIT tab
• Select/mark the box FIXED DECIMAL PLACES: and from the scrolling-option list select the numbers of decimal that ALWAYS any number will have
• Click the OK button to apply the change.

Re: Want forced decimals

FDibbins and humdingaling, thank you both.

FDibbins, it's not exactly as you said, but it gave me enough to go on. The exact sequence I needed was;
EXCEL>>PREFERENCES>> EDIT>>FIXED DECIMAL PLACES

Hundingaling, what I've got is Excel 2004 for Mac (OS 10.4.11) and on another machine Excel 2008 for Mac (OS 10.7.5). Under the TOOLS menu there is no OPTIONS sub menu. Alas.

Typically I've used the "right click">>FORMAT CELLS menu to change the number format, where the number of decimals can be selected as well, but not a negative number. To get what I want this time I have to use a negative number of decimals in PREFERENCES and then adjust the number to make is work in FORMAT CELLS. I foresee some frustration with this but that is what was requested.

Thanks again.
