Function weekday

I am trying to make use of weekday function by putting a date in one cell and asking for the weekday number with the format.
=weekday(A1,2) in a cell D2

Say in A1 cell I have a date put in as 7/15/2014.

However, I am obtaining error as #VALUE! and I don't know the reason behind it.

I was already a member. However, just have moved into a new role so I opened my excel forum account after 6 years and bravo!!!
