Angry Hello to Excel Forum Members.

I have updated my profile for the curious set who would like to know about a guy past the usual retirement age who is still doing engineering. By engineering I mean systems engineering -- mostly requirements analysis, writing test requirements, and then demonstrating the tests to the customer.

Requirements and test procedures are documented in IBM Rational Doors, mainly to have strict traceability of Requirements --> Test Steps. For reasons I can't get into here, we have actually created links between the Test Modules and Requirements modules like this; Requirements --> Test Procedure. It turns out the relationships between the two module types is many-many, which leads to an interesting problem when listing the relation of Test Step to Requirement. As there are a few thousand of these relations, doing it by hand is not very practical. Enter Excel.

I have a worksheet that does this, and it took writing a UDF that extended Vlookup based on a concept from Peter Moran of Australia -- Thank you Peter. Even so the total formula is horrendously long, and takes minutes to calculate. I don't mind the time, but it is the maintenance of the thing that is frightening. So, I wrote a wrapper around the UDF, and it is really simple to call.

I may need help with it, but can't give any particulars because a., this is an Introduction, and b., I'm at home and the Excel in question is twelve miles away. And, finally, what I have already read in this forum may have inspired a fix.

Where I can actually offer help is in the DOORS --> Excel area. I can also help with DOORS exports to Word, but probably not in this forum.

    Yours,

    Sonoflawrence
