Why is my copy of windows xp not valid?

    Hello everyone,

I have windows xp professional edition and i have had an icon on my taskbar for a long time now telling me that my system may be at risk for counterfeit software. now even though i am ordering a new computer with a different version of windows i don't know how i would go about trying to validate my copy of windows without purchasing a kit and it says the product key installed on this system is not valid. What should i do to get rid of the icon and validate windows? (the icon for windows is shaped like a star). Can anyone help.

    Hi J.

Microsoft have been spying on your computer... probably when you attempted updates. There validation software has detected you are possible running a pirate copy of XP-Pro (a lot were pirated).

The only sensible (and proper) way to get round it is to either accept Microsofts offer to purchase a license (could be expensive for the Pro version) or purchase and install a new (basic) version of Windows. You really should do one or the other as you won't be able to (easily) obtain security updates for an invalid copy of Windows.

    Good luck,
    J.
PS: If you purchased the computer from a dealer with the XP-Pro pre-installed and thought it was legit, Microsoft have been known to look into these cases and possibly offer you a discount to buy the license.
