Regedit is not saving the change and I have to make the same change every time I restart

    Dear Experts,
Every time I start my windows XP I have to run regedit and change Cache value under
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Explorer\User Shell Folders
On the right side of the pane under cache it shows :
    F:\Temporary Internet Files
    I change it to
    %USERPROFILE%\Temporary Internet Files
And system works fine if I don’t change it gives me problem with word and outlook.
This problem started coming up few days back though I am not too sure but I think system update was running and I removed a USB after system said its safe to remove.
Can you please tell me how to permanently save the above change in regedit
    Please advise.
    Best Regards/VKS

I would expect you are on a company machine, which is driving a global setting which is overwriting any local customisation.

I would solve this problem by extracting the reg value from regedit (File -> export), then saving the relevant reg file in startup. This would effectively achieve the edit every tim eyou started the pc without intervention, not the same as permanent overwrite, but the same effect.
(or create a shortcut in startup to the reg file which you've saved in your documents, to be a bit 'tidier').

Depends on the team. I used to work in a place where the enduring quality of the IT dept. was not to understand IT and the need for personal productivity. I've left there now, and have a blissful, pain-free, IT life. If you get stuck, the approach I describe is fairly straightforward. Just select the relevant key (after you've edited it). Export it. Export just that branch. Save that file somewhere you know. Then create a shortcut in the startup folder in the start menu and point that shortcut at the reg file.
