VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

    Hello

I trying to apply a VLOOKUP formula between to spreadsheets that are on 2 different sharepoint sites on the same tenant.

In idea is that the formula looks up the table range VMLYR_RF_TABLE in the tab VMLYR_RF of the xlsx file.

Sadly, it is not working and excel does not indicate why.

Any thoughts on this are most welcome

    Welcome to the forum.

Please change your forum profile to the version (365?) of Excel that you are running.

What is the formula that you have tried? What is the error message? Are both workbooks open?

    More detail, please.

You can not post links, etc, yet. But you can post your excel file. Read the yellow banner (top) for instructions.

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

The workbook contains no formula - just a hard copied #VALUE error message.

I suggest you copy the formula to your next post - split it into THREE sections so that the forum software allows you to post.

It's just not your day!! All we can see in that file is #VALUE. We can not see the formula that is causing it.

Try pasting the formula into a post in this thread. Are there any < symbols in it?? If so paste and add a space after them.

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

@Glenn - I think it will be the Sharepoint link in the formula that the forum software won't like. This is why I've suggested the OP split it into three sections.

No - please don't do it this way!!!

Break the whole thing into sectioms, but don't CHANGE anything.

    Try again, please!

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

In short, I put a barcode into cell K3 and the formula consults around excel file on another sharepoint site to pull up the equipment details.
I am adapting a working formula when I could host the 2 files locally. I cannot find anything on the web about VLOOKUP over different places.

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

So is the error a #VALUE error or a #REF error? The former suggests that the VLOOKUP is finding the relevant data, but there is a mismatch (it's finding a number instead of text, ore vice versa). If the latter, then it may need both workbooks open.

I assume it's a #VALUE error, so you need to check that the lookup value and the values in the lookup range are of the same type.

With nothing further to go on, this is the best I can offer.

EDIT: Just noticed that your VLOOKUP foormula is missing the final argument (0 for an EXACT match, 1 for an approximate match).

    =VLOOKUP(file_path!($k3,****_rf_table,5,missing_argument)

    What EXACTLY is in K3?

What EXACTLY is in the lookup range? Does the lookup range have five columns? Is the lookup value in the first of those columns?

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

K3 in the test file has a value of Y04804 which is a computer barcode number

the range is predefined in the file that is being looked up and hold about 10 columns and 200 rows. My goal is for the VLOOKUP to scan the range for Y04804 and pull up the info in the column 5 of the same row .

The online excel I have to use does not show any error message apart from being flagged in red . I will investigate what missing_argument maybe needed.
    Thank you

I'm hoping Glenn has some better ideas. I think I've exhausted what I can do to help at this point.

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

I presume that excel files hosted on sharepoint are constantly "open" so therefore constantly consultable. But it is a presumption because I cannot find any info on the web about this.
Thank you for all your help.

Re: VLOOKUP between 2 files in sharepoint

I'm not so sure that your presumption is correct, but I have no evidence to offer - sorry. When I was working with Sharepoint files, I pulled data from one to another using PowerQuery, and that definitely does NOT require source files to be open.
