    Duplicate posts

We (the regulars) all know about the problem with duplicate posts.

I have yet to see any of my posts get duplicated (and I post a lot so the opportunity for duplicates is definitely there).

So, why is that? Is there something about the software I use that prevents my posts from being duplicated?

    I use IE11 and Win7.

Duplicate posts would help me to pad my post count!

    Re: Duplicate posts

Good question, Tony. I will push that to the TT

I, of late, have had quite a few duplicates, but they seem to happen at random - 1 post will be double, then the next few wont.

I have found that, if the wheel spins, pressing F5 often make the post come out normal and quick
(edit: exactly what I just had to do for this post)

I laughed when I read Ford's double post at the bottom (page 3) of:

BTW - your F5 suggestion seemed to work for me.

    Re: Duplicate posts

I think the duplicates often occur when you submit a post and get the spinner for a while and are then taken into Edit mode with the message like "You have to wait 30 seconds between posts, please post again in 15 seconds". To the unwary, this will cause them to wait for a while and then resubmit (maybe more than once). A cynic might say that this is a deliberate ploy to increase the post count and thread count on the site, compared to other sites.

I have learnt that when this happens you just need to scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and you will often see that your post has been included in the thread, in which case you can just click on New Posts and avoid the duplication of re-submittal. Often it will take some time before the forum software catches up with itself (updating indexes and the like) and displays your post (and the little green symbol to indicate that you have subscribed to a thread) in the New Posts list, though if you click on the thread title before then (and are prepared for other delays) you will see the post included among the others in that thread.

I don't think you need to pad out your post count, Biff !!

And, of course, there are times when the spinner continues for a long time, as it just did for me, and you eventually get locked out by Securi or you get the Database Error, both of which just happened on my last post. I've taken to highlighting the text of the post and Ctrl-C before pressing the Submit button, because otherwise you'll lose what you have just typed in.

All this extra work, just to get round the deficiencies of the site !!

My previous post is still not showing in UserCP, even though 15 minutes have gone by.

    Re: Duplicate posts

PLUS, the email notification system is not working correctly, so there is often a long delay before OPs are informed that there is a reply to their thread. Occasionally the Forum catches up with itself, like last night, when I received a "burst" of 65 emails within one minute, some of which related to posts from days ago (and many of which were duplicated - I received 30 emails for the same post/thread).

    Phew !! (I'd better not swear ...)

I have started the copy/paste thing too Pete, if I see it is taking a while.

taken into Edit mode with the message like "You have to wait 30 seconds between posts, please post again in 15 seconds".
I have never been taken to Edit mode?

Duplicate posts, Spinners. Banners Bannished Server Sucurri Timed out Nootification Wonks

The spinner workaround always works for me, IE9, IE11, Goggle Chrome. I get an immediate post and never a duplicate when I use that technique. ( Spinner workaround is to re navigate in a new tab to where you were, ( or copy the URL where you are across to the new tab URL bar ) , then close the spinner. That ties up a bit with some of the other spinner workarounds mentioned in this Thread: The key seems to be not to wait for it – kill it, close it – who knows what might be going on in that time anyway
( and yes, always ignore anything like “.....wait 30 seconds between posts, please post again
...” – that is the trap many OPs fall for I expect )

The nice thing about ExcelForum is a longer Editing time. Maybe an alternative to deleting a Duplicate post could be to add an afterthought or a funny joke or a nice picture or a rude word to vent the frustration ; ) – and then help to get the post deleted by an enthusiastic Mod :-)

The spinner workaround obviously does not work with the time out, data base, server down, and similar such wonkies where you get locked out. That effects me less. I always prepare posts in Word anyway. I have all the BB Code Tag bits and anything else I need on macros running off extended short cut keys. So it is a lot quicker and more convenient than using the Forum Editor anyway. (And essential for me as I cannot blody spell write anyway and the spelling and grammar checker need do to have) .
And then the back up is already there, and easier to get to anyway. So even the time out data base wonks do not affect me much. I think I have a workaround for most problems, - I use them by instinct so barely notice the problems.
But that all suits posting longer post less often: I can really feel the frustrations for those regulars that make the majority of the contributions answering many Threads: it is understandable when the go off in frustration. It’s really sad that I have lost access to some experts no longer able to post here due to the problems affecting them to badly. But I still benefit from lurking their old posts solutions. Occasionally I might catch them somewhere else. It would be nice to think they might take another look in if the new server improves things. Maybe we should spread the word around.. Or maybe better wait a bit..... Hope the Server change does not just introduce new problems... but then might find a workaround to them too..

The Banner came up. ( As I write this it has gone again - "Log in log out, it comes and goes" ) - They had a few attempts at getting the English writed correctly. Maybe they should prepare their posts in Word with spelling and Grammer checker. Might encourage them to make more contact from time to time.

A banner for the Email notification problem that often crops up, and User CP alternative might be useful as well, - but then if you bannered all the problems there would be no room for anything else!!

Bet you could do some awesome Formula Tips and Tutorials. Prepare them in Word when you get hit and locked out by a sucurri data base time out wonk
