Following links to other posts no longer works as it once did

    Don't'cha just love this place?

The link below should take you to post #8 in the thread:

    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647

It used to do that but I noticed a change in how links are displayed starting about a week or so ago.

The links are now displayed in a shorter syntax but they don't work like they used to.

As I said, the above link should take you post #8 in the thread but it doesn't. It takes you to post #1 in the thread.

I can still post the link using the [post]url[post] tags and that will take you to the intended post # within the thread.

    https://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647

What's weird is that posting the link and [post]url[post] link both look exactly the same but behave differently.

Like I said, this place is freaking awesome!

Chin up ...... and stuff Tony :)

If you add something like #post3096647 on the end of any link it will usally get you there,
That is one of the little work arounds that makes me do something I'd better not say

See here to find out how to get that number 3096647, : ( If the link works.. lol.. .... if it don't - The Bear is going to get it again. He loves it really, The b%^&*tch )
    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread...803&highlight=

    Chin up etc.. Tony,
Like Jerry said.. just keep.... ...

    .....:
I think I figured this one out, or at least a “ExceForum Software work around”, Like me and Tony love so much.
    So here you go:
If this ( or any link that previously took you to a particular post ) _..
    http://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/860240-concatall-udf-by-tigeravatar-post3096647.html
_... takes you to post #1 and not the post you wanted, then the cure seems to be “an added redirection”:’_- add a # followed by the post number. So like this:
    http://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/860240-concatall-udf-by-tigeravatar-post3096647.html#post3096647
    _............................

Note, However, since I did those test a few days ago it has changed again !!!
Tony, you will now ( at least at the time of writing this ) find that both those links you gave now take you to the correct Post and not to the first post #1.

By the way, You will find that this will not work ( at least at the time of writing this ) _...
    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647
_.. that is to say that it will take you to post #1, and not post #8 as you wished.

Also, something else has changed since a few days ago: Should you have previously added an extra #Post1234567 when not needed, then it had the opposite effect and took you back again to post #1. This is no longer the case. It does no harm ( today ) to add as many #Post1234567 as you like !!!
So, for example, that non working link from above ( http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647 ) will work, that is to say take you to post #8 if you try either of these:
    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647#post3096647
    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647#post3096647#post3096647
    http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?p=3096647#post3096647#post3096647#post3096647#post3096647
    etc.....
So the fix for today, to be sure you get there, is add a lot of extra #post3096647#post3096647 type bits.. !!!

( For what it’s worth I have seen this problem on other Forums as well, so this time it is not just an ExcelForum problem )
    _.______________________

That above is all a bit messy and volatile, that is to say it seems to vary from day to day depending likely on some messing about that is done by someone and that no one tells us about... . Never mind, we like that don’t we Tony, and we love the work arounds we find .......

So this seems a more Bullet proof way of giving a link...:
_...: You can mis use the Reply With Quote: Bubble. That is to say you can forge one.
Having Forged one appropriately, you are able to post a Quote Bubble, such that when one clicks on the small
    >>
Icon in the Quote Bubble, this reliably takes you to the Post you wish to send the person to.
I expect that this way may be less susceptive to problems caused by different constructs , as originally commented on by Tony. Indeed experiments here: http://www.excelforum.com/developmen...ml#post4586400 found that to be the case

So this is what it looks like finally after posting
Quote Originally Posted by Someone at '_-.. View Post

This is how you do it, that is to say, this is what those two quotes above looks like in the Editor Window in BB Code form before posting. The important thing is that number 4586400

[QUOTE=Someone at '_-..;4586400] [size=1]Click that little white '_-..>> Icon above right to get there[/size][/QUOTE]
    [QUOTE=Someone at.....;4586400] [size=1]Click that little[Table][tr][td=bgcolor:darkblue][COLOR="#FFFFFF"] [size=2]>>[/size][/COLOR][/td][/tr][/table] Icon above right to get there[/size][/QUOTE]

( To get the post number ( in this case 4586400 , see here http://www.excelforum.com/suggestion...ost-quick.html )

I guess that Solves this about as far as it is possible. ( If I have confused you, then just click on the little white >> bits in a quote Bubble, mess about with the number “behind” it, and you should get the point – I think our mate Vlad did... )
    Alan

P.s. 1 In this post I Have purposely disabled some of the hyperlink , ( that is to say they do not work when you click on them ) , as one way to show the full hyperlink characters here. So you need to copy the URL to the browser URL Bar rather than just clicking on it.
Here is another way to set the full text but not disable the hyperlink working when you click on it:
It involves using the “Friendly name” possibility usually used to change what is seen to something simple like click here_....( Hyperlink without the "friendly name" https://www.mrexcel.com/forum/about-...ml#post4750580 https://www.bbcode.org/examples/?id=9 ) GiveHyperlinkTextToDisplayTheStringURLAddress.JPG http://imgur.com/AmVNe6v
So for our example, I would write this in the Reply Editor Window:_...
    [URL=excelforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/860240-concatall-udf-by-tigeravatar-post3096647.html]http://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/860240-concatall-udf-by-tigeravatar-post3096647.html[/URL]
_...That will give me, after posting, this:
    http://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-tutorials/860240-concatall-udf-by-tigeravatar-post3096647.html
Note I needed to knock off the http://www. bit to get it to work, otherwise putting the full link there seems to cause this way not to work for the case of wanting the full URL string text for the finally shown working hyperlink. ( It may log you out though at ExcelForum ( not other sites ) – all a bit messy again !! )

P.s.2 Tony, Please come back – I am running out of posts to do a non spamming spam so as to try and catch your attention.
