Thumbs up Thanks button or +Rep for Users on posts

It would be really great to see if the solution I post worked for someone, or more importantly didn't work for someone. Also gives the guys solving problems on the boards some incentive.

EDIT: Just checked the Rep point feature, nicely tucked in the form of a star.

BTW, is there anyway to check a user's rep points?

You can't see how many points a person has exactly, but the green boxes underneath a username gives you a good idea of how much rep a person has. The first dark green box is given for free, and for every 100 rep points you get another dark green box until about 500 points. Then you start getting light green boxes for every 200 rep points and that maxes out at 5 dark greens and 6 light greens

You can also click on Community -> Member List and then sort by reputation to see where members stand in terms of rep points.
    Hope that helps,

Just don't take it for granted that someone with many rep points / green dots gives better/faster solutions/help than someone with fewer rep points/green dots....

Re: Thanks button or +Rep for Users on posts

That's a good point. I have over 300 posts and over 80 rep points but I still come below someone who has only 7 posts.

Another thing I have realised (and I don't subscribe to this) is that one appears to be able to rise to the status of Valued Forum Contributor (and above presumably) without answering any questions it seems.

The fact that a person has asked 200 questions or even said "Hi and welcome to the forum" so many times and has been registered for 120 days doesn't seem to be the right criteria by which reputation/status is gained.

Not complaining just pointing it out.

If I helped, please don't forget to add to my reputation. (click on the star below the post)

If the problem is solved, please: Select Thread Tools (on top of your 1st post) -> Mark this thread as Solved.

Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.

Re: Thanks button or +Rep for Users on posts

You don't get any post count from the introductions forum, so that doesn't help you attain a new title. New members rarely give out rep points for that (if they even know how) - and if they do, it only allots one point.

I guess you have to look at things two ways:

    1. Someone asks a couple hundred questions - most being more complex than simple functions - but never learns as much as they probably should and earns the 'Valued Forum Contributor" title.

    2. Someone asks a couple hundred questions, most of which get answered by experts or skilled volunteers, providing more information and (hopefully) a solution so that future members can find the answers to their problems.

I have many questions every day (not only about Excel, of course) but most of the time I know how to search for the answer I need, then adapt the information to meet my needs. Many people don't or can't learn that way, and need more help. They contribute questions, others contribute answers.

The only other way to get a new title is via a Moderator or Admin changing it manually. This has only been done for a few users in the past, typically due to their notoriety, err, proven knowledge of Excel and activity on various Excel-related forums.

The fact I also wanted to point out is that some members beg for rep points in their sig ( sometimes in large bold letters) and are thus susceptible to get more rep points even answering less posts than those who don't run after the rep points. ( no offense meant Russell)

I wouldn't know anything about that Pepe!
If you're happy with someone's help, click that little star at the bottom left of their post to give them Reps.

There was one recently who asked for rep directly in his/her post - not even in a sig.

Is that aimed at me Cutter? If so - then guilty as charged but at the time I think I was feeling hurt that OP was so pleased but hadn't marked as solved or given rep. Not really begging, more like demonstrating that it's better to give than receive.!

Pepe - no offence taken. I wouldn't dream of bold letters or even upper case!! LOL. Keep up the good work A.

    Have a nice day y'all

Re: Thanks button or +Rep for Users on posts

Actually, I wasn't aiming it at anyone in particular because I don't remember who it was. But I'm pretty sure the person's post count was very low (like in the 20's) so I don't think it was you.
As for not receiving rep - get used to it. More times than not, you won't get it. Mostly because the OP doesn't know about it.

I find it interesting, the state of the interwebs and how everything is based on likes, dislikes, rep points, and the likes. I wonder if people (the one-time posters) would be more inclined to give reps if the universal "Like" was implemented instead of the star system?
