    Negative reputation

So today I was looking in my settings and saw a red bar - a negative rep. It was on a post that, when I reread the post I removed my post and left an edited post that I misunderstood his requirements. So, did lose points? It is odd especially since his typed comment is "thanks for your kindness!"

    Hi Sambo,

Sometimes the OP (original poster) just has no idea what radio button to click and you get neg rep. I've had a share of these too. See if the Mods will fix it for you.

I'll have to check with them. I wonder if I lost any points over it? I struggle to get the ones I get and can't afford to lose any.

More posts user has - more points his REP is worth.
So if he's a new user you could lose max 1 point.

If you get positive rep of a top member then you can afford dozens of negative rep new users

If you have a red bar, you WILL have lost a point or two, most likely one if it's a new user. By the sound of it, a mistake which the Admins can reverse for you.

Only Admin can reverse it. Mods can not.

Pls send a pm to Jerry for that.

    Re: Negative reputation

Thx TMS, I think he (?) is a new user, has 6 posts listed. But it is a weird thing to do, give an "I disapprove" post and a note that says "thanks for the kindness!" BTW, thx for the bump. I hope sometime this year I might make it to forum expert.

    Re: Negative reputation

it is interesting, I helped out a student once with what I think was homework - she offered to send me something privately but I declined, just prompted her to bump my rep as thanks enough. well… within a short time, someone new joined the site and bumped my reputation and I saw that the usually green bar color was clear and my reputation hadn't changed. I suspect the forum has a setting to try to keep people from pulling stunts like having their friends join and "pump up" their reps. I thought it was interesting anyway.

    Re: Negative reputation

It was probably that the new OP had not made any posts - their "Rep Power" is zero until they do so, and that shows as a clear bar.

    Re: Negative reputation

If someone joins the forum but has not posted anything in the "active" forums, that is, not the Water Cooler, etc., they can +rep you but it will appear as a grey bar and not increase (or decrease) your rep.

    Re: Negative reputation

Now that I think about it it was grey and not clear. I spent about an hour last night trying to find out what I could about reputation points and how they are counted and I couldn't find a lot. It took a lot of digging too. That is very helpful. Thx guys.

    Re: Negative reputation

Not sure if, or where, it is documented in detail, but you start with zero rep power as a new user with no posts. I think that, as soon as you have asked or answered a question in one of the question forums, your rep power is set to one (1). It increases with your status and your "seniority" and, by seniority, I mean how long you have been a member. I think it increases by one point per year. So, someone who has made the odd post or two, but has been a member for 10 years will have a rep power of 10 or 11. Experts, Gurus, Moderators and Admins have increased rep power based on status.

I've been a member for about 5 years, so I guess I get 5 points from that plus something for being a Guru. I don't think the number of questions asked or answered comes into the equation but I stand to be corrected.

All that said, it's purely hypothetical Unless you are a Moderator or an Administrator, there's no way you can tell what your rep power is, barring someone telling you

    Regards, TMS

    Sambo Kid,

The negative rep has been converted to positive based on the accompanying comment.
