Looking for a helpful tutorial for learning Excel

    Hello all,

I am currently using Excel 2010 and have the book "Excel 2010 All-In-One for Dummies." Does anyone have any recommendations as to whether this is a good book to start with? Or others.

    Thanks,
    XDailey

    Hi and welcome
The first thing you should ask yourself is " What do I need Excel for?" so that you cam limit your apprenticeship do subjects of interest, as XL is very vast.
I, for instance, don't know much about VBA because I never had any need for it ( or not very often that is). Others, on the contrary, are well versed on the subject
One of the best books is reading answers on this forum, trying to understand them and ask questions if needed. Our members are always glad to help.
Trying to provide help yourself is also very instructive.

There is no such thing as an unhelpful tutorial.

As Pepe has already said, what you want to do with Excel will determine what sort of help you need, so you need to work this out first. If you have the book, use it - it will teach you something if you are a complete novice, anyway.

Re: Looking for a helpful tutorial for learning Excel

Thank you for your replies. I am working my way through the "All-In-One" and learning the basics, and developing an elementary familiarity
to the possibilities with Excel. Once I am through with the book I would like to find a tutorial that will give me a more "hands on" approach
to individual lessons. Since I am interested in more of the financial reporting capabilities of Excel, I guess a "Financial" lessons
workbook would be where I would want to go next with this. Thanks, XDailey

The question in my mind is do you really need a book? There are many online tutorials, and, in addition to this, financial templates for all sorts of scenarios. If you want a more hands-on way of learning, then set yourself a project. Find a template and decide which bits of it are helpful to you, then set about recreating it.

AliGW, you are right with regard to the template. I do however like collecting books, especially when I can buy them on ebay for less than $5.00USD. XDailey

Re: Looking for a helpful tutorial for learning Excel

You should definitely start with a book.
Most of them are well-organized, treat items from simple to complex, take you by the hand and provide examples that match the recently acquired capabilities.
A book makes a distinction between essentials and superficials.
Being a good teacher is a seldom found proficiency; it's nice to have one in the form of a book.

The question 'what do you want' is paradoxical if you are not familiar wtih Excel.
So start familiarizing with Excel and doing so your awareness of what you can do with it and what you can expect of it will grow gradually.
Your learning curve will be steepest if you learn this language systematically and not haphazardly.
Even Excel handbooks that contain suboptimal 'solutions'/examples can be of benefit as long as you study them in the spirit of: "can't this be done more elegantly, more concisely or more efficiently ? "

Re: Looking for a helpful tutorial for learning Excel

Thanks for the reply snb. After going through the All-In-One and being exposed to the general (I say "general" loosely) workings of excel, I am planning on concentrating on financial templates like Ali suggested for now. I will probably be on the look out for cheap books on ebay and hopefully find a couple that provide meet my expectations. If I have learned anything it is that in order to learn any piece of software it takes different streams of learning, such as reading forum posts and watching you tube videos, as well as reading a book. As trivial as this may seem, after finishing "All-In-One" I realized that it never mentioned the SUBTOTAL function, which I would say could be an important function in any financial spreadsheet...I learned about that function on you tube. I guess that is why I will be looking forward to another book, some online you tube tutorials, and the forum. XDailey

    XL&ME,

Thank you for ExcelIsFun. I am working my way through the lessons and it really is as good as a book. Mike's enthusiasm makes you want to keep going. It is a shame that I did not have a teacher like him when I took my Office class.
