    Upgrade or not.

    Hi all,
I'm using "Excel 2007". My contribution to the forum is about asking questions purely to learn. Excel fascinates me to the extent that I want to know how, where and when about nothing in particular. The reasoning behind my questions is not for work, only for interest, keeping my brain and fingers working but my latest question is....is there a need for me to upgrade from version 2007 to a more up to date one. If your answer is yes, then please explain to what advantage. Regards..

    Re: Upgrade or not.

It depends on what you need to do with excel. If you find you can do EVERYTHING you need with excel 2007, then keep your money. BUT if you find there are things you'd LIKE to do, but can't... the latest versions (especially O365's subscriptions) are incredibly powerful.

    Re: Upgrade or not.

    Definitely YES!!
Your version does not have Power Query and this is the same tool of Power BI.
You can't use the new spill array functions that are a game change in terms of Excel functions.
The new functions that you can use with Excel 365 give you much much more room to implement solutions.
Excel 365 will keep you updated with new implemented functions.

Power Query is an add-in for Excel 2010/2013.
From 2010 to 2019 versions no great changes.
2021 and 365 great difference from previous versions in my opinion. LET() and FILTER() functions, for example, make great impact in formulas.

    Re: Upgrade or not.

If 2007 suits your needs, then I wouldn't say there was a "need" to upgrade. I personally have 2010 for this reason although do use 365 at work.

That said, 2007 was the very first ribboned edition and it lacks the back stage, the option for PQ and has a poor macro recorder. It also attracted criticism for some mathematical bugs.

I agree that the new functions in 365 do add a lot of value and you'll likely find that questions/solutions increasingly make use of those.

If you don't want to go down the subscription route, there are stand alone versions which contain some of the 365 features- Office 2024 is coming out soon I believe.

I subscribe to 365 - that way you always have all the most up-to-date functions. MS365 Personal is currently a penny shy of £60 a year in the UK.

Wow, £60, I had no idea it was that price. Does it have the same Excel functions ?

It has ALL of the Excel functions. You can pay monthly, but that works out more expensive. I think it's a bargain, frankly.

Bottom level, Excel 2010 with Power Query as an add-in, but if the price cited by AliGW is affordable go for it.

Bear in mind that subscription allows you to install Office on multiple devices. I have it on 2 laptops, a desktop, 2 iPads and 2 Samsung Smart phones. It's not quite the same functionality on the tablets and phones, but enough (no VBA, for example).

Some of it can look a bit daunting... but with a bit of effort, it can be incredibly powerful.

Hi Ali, may I ask... can I access MS365 without an internet connection with this subscription package?

Yes - you install the 365 Office package on your machine and make sure that OneDrive is set to keep files on the machine as well as in the cloud. This way you can work happily offline. I would never use a solution that was 100% cloud-based.
