Arrow Is there anyone who uses Excel and other Microsoft Office applications for fun?

It looks like many people on this forum and at libraries use Excel for a business or for an assignment. Is there anybody who uses Excel just for fun (trying out the different tools, experimenting, and see what happens)?

Is it me, or am I the only one who actually likes playing with Excel and learning about cool Excel functions and VBA programming language in my leisure time?

Maybe, I am just pursuing a rather bizarre hobby.

    I feel so lonely.

Can Excel be used for something other than fun? 91% of my Excel usage is forum related. 0.1% is helping people in my company how to use Sumproduct.
0.9% is helping people in my company how to use Vlookup.
8% is helping people in my company realise why pie charts are bad and what to use instead.
    The latter is fun again.

Nah, I hate every minute I sit at a computer using Excel. I'd much rather be in the basement filing.

Not me for sure. I use them to work and I associate these programs with struggle and efforts only.

I love Excel and find it truly mind boggling that more people don't. It is just so powerful and versatile. There is something for everyone.

Yes, it is mostly used for business and so people don't immediately think "fun!", but even in the context of work, it can be used to simplify and reduce the amount of work done, and how can that be seen as anything but good? Aside from that, however, you can even use Excel to make games (usually requires VBA), or track your fantasy football league, or organize a little league schedule, or maintain an easily searchable database of recipes, or thousands and thousands of other hobbies.

I truly do not undersdtand how the following quotes are not used by just about everyone.

"We should start a band! Yeah! And we can make a schedule of practices in Excel so that we always know when and where to meet!"

"Maybe I'll take up painting. Yeah! And I can make an Excel workbook to track the number of paintings I do and rate them by different categories so that I can more easily chart and analyze my improvement!"

"Hey, let's do lunch. Great! Let's compare our lunch preferences workbooks to determine the best restaurant and meeting time!"

"The fridge is emtpy. I guess it's time to go to the store. I'll just print out my grocery list from my Cupboard Inventory and Tracking workbook, so that I will know what items I use the most. Oh! and I should check my Sales and Coupons workbook too!"

hmm depends on how your mind works i think. bar charts can be worse take this example everyone had 100 jobs to do. first example shows everyone about equal but by changing the start point "caroline" looks absolutely the worst. i have seen this done. just pick the top of a data set and make things look bad

Re: Is there anyone who uses Excel and other Microsoft Office applications for fun?

I got really heavily vested into Excel back when I was playing the MMO FFXI...

I was well regarded on some forums where people would continuously ask me "What should I use in this situation... I have blahblahblah available." I got tired of bestowing my infinite knowledge to them one at a time, so I ended up spendign a few days consolidating all of the known game mechanics into one single spreadsheet while using maths to perform probabilities out to an infinite limit.

I'm still rather impressed with its 355 downloads of the latest version.

Nowadays, I just keep learning excel because I'm the goto person in the department for all things Excel. I figure if I can maintain the illusion of value, I can maintain a job.

But I guess at our excel anonymous parties, I'll just have a place set for myself, Hestra, and Whiz. Remember though folks, admitting you have a problem is the first step!

Martin, a column chart's Y axis must absolutely, always start at zero. If the values are too close together to make a meaningful distinction visually, more analysis is required. For example compare how many unfinished jobs each person had. Sort the data. Plot as a horizontal bar chart. See attached.

You need a lens flare in there, but otherwise an amazing way of presenting the data!
