Why do OP post pictures not sheets?

These last months OP's have the tendency to post a picture instead of a sheet.
Does anybody have an idea why that is? I have been on the forum for years, and this happened but rarely before?
As I personally do not have time/want/like to retype data this bothers me .

So don't bother. Ask them if you want to upload a workbook instead of a picture and if they don't then don't bother! I can't remember who did it but not long ago someone here responded to an OP with pictures, I thought that was very fitting so you could do that to, in the name of being a smart-a$$!

It is either "A picture is worth a thousand words" or the file is too big to attach or their boss won't let them post the real thing.

I totally agree that retyping someone's data is really nice of you.

Trouble is, when you reply with a picture, they just carry on regardless.

Andrew didn't respond with the picture in that thread, but he did make a picture as a joke response and put it in the Biggest turn-offs thread (post 71).

It really was quite comical, and just thinking about it and rereading it made me laugh all over again!

Well that's what I usually do, and also usually, OP posts the sheet when I'm offline, and also usually, when I get back, the fun's over....

I like the "picture answer" idea though

@sweep, thanks for the link, that was the thread I was referring to.

My gut reaction is to say something like "a picture may paint a thousand words but it's pretty useless when answering Excel questions, please post a sample workbook".

That said, if I understand what is required and I can answer it without too much effort, I probably will.

Not quite sure I understand what you're asking ... You can upload files to the forum. Files can be anything that the forum allows, e.g. xls, xlsx, xlsm, jpg, gif, png .....

If they wont be used at all, we can ask the tech team to disable pictures.

Yes, so can we restrict users to upload picture formats ?? Or might be the Forum Leads can have an answer to this?? Are there any specific reasons that we have picture images allowed?

sometimes its easier to show someone or for them to show you their problem when it's not code/formula related e.g.

banning pictures from being posted to the forum would be absolutely wrong. Sparrows and cannons, if you get the drift. Pictures do have their legitimate place in illustrating certain aspects of a problem. They just should not be used in lieu of a workbook, and we will need to keep asking OPs to post spreadsheets instead of images.

Arlette, now, please don't go ahead and disable uploading images. Especially with differences in regional settings (dates !!! will never come across in a posted workbook), or charting etc., an image of what the OP sees is vital to preparing a solution.

I totally agree with mdw. What i meant in my post was - if we do have a clear cut reason for not requiring them, they can be disallowed. I was only talking about the ability to disallow them. I understand the need for pics in this forum completely.

you just managed to contradict yourself in one sentence.

I must admit that I often ask for a sample workbook, but because it is more likely to reflect what they actually want ... especially if they have to put something together ... than "If I've got apples and pears in cells A1 to C5, how can I get the price from somewhere in my imagination". And actually, it's a Bill of Materials for an engineering complex.

I know they're not always needed, but, whatever my solution is, I like to test it on the user's data. Too often I've ended up in long dialogues trying to second guess the requirement and, when the sample workbook is provided, the question can be answered in seconds.

For those who enjoy the challenge of establishing the requirements by telepathy, I salute you ... especially those who provide an effective solution without the benefit of a safety net.

This is a big non-issue and as I stated before, if someone is bothered by picture representations then don't help! I've come across OP using pics and have either just kept looking at different threads or I've asked them to upload workbooks. Either way, it's no skin off my back. Cigarette & a crepe?

I must admit, I was probably guilty of posting a img when I first joined here.
