Yup, down for me as well.

Saturday night in the UK - my wife on night-shift, the kids in bed, bog all on the TV and no Excel forum to keep me occupied.

    Thank god for wine!

Sad because I've now reached the end of the bottle.

I suppose I could open another, but it's 12:35am, so I'll probably just go to bed

This is probably the only server I know of that keeps dropping connection just because its doing a back-up?

It just went down again - I am getting into the habit of copying my post before I send it now, so I dont have to re-type everything

ok so the net gods are really having fun tonight

Every time I add anything to a thread, it takes ages...and then I loose connection to the server. When I click on my short-cut to join, it goes straight in, no problems at all...if i check the thread I was responding to when I got dropped, my post is there....but the very 1st thread i try to respond to after that, bang, down goes my connection.

This is becoming way beyond frustrating now!!

edit: and it dropped me as this was being posted too, but when I looked, the post was here

Seems that Saturday night extends well into Sunday morning now.

Not to mention the many mid week glitches when the forum is performing poorly.

I'm guessing that this must be off putting for a lot of people, especially those who are new to the forum and not familiar with the techniques for saving your text before trying to post to a thread.

Note that, quite often at the moment, the reply is "accepted" but the thread is not refreshed. I've taken to copying my response and then manually refreshing to see if it has "taken". The last post in this thread was an example of that happening.

Not always Ive found on many occassions i have tried to submit a thread with well over the 10 characters required only to have the message come up that it has to have 10 characters or more. Yet when I hit the back arrow on explorer and click on submit again it goes through no problem????

@dogberry: sounds like a different problem. That said, I suspect they all have the same root cause ... poor database control, management, and backup, and a tech team who would appear (at face value) not to be up to the job.

The forum backup timing has been revised to Sunday 3.00am IST. Lets check this for a couple of weeks and see if its posing any issues.

Seems that *every time* that I try to respond to *any thread* at the moment, it takes an age and goes into "forum induced duplicate post mode", or there is a database error, or there is a server error ... or any combination. I think I'll consider this a final test ... if this post errors in any way, I think I'll just go away and come back in a week or so.

    TMS,

The tech team were doing some bug fixing hence you faced these issues.

    bug fixing
To be doing "bug fixing" on a live database in prime time is totally unprofessional ... I would have said "amateurish" but that would be an insult to amateurs who I am sure would do a better job than the tech team are doing.

If they were employed by me ... well, they just wouldn't be employed by me!

Clearly "Change Management" is not something that these guys are familiar with. It's a disgrace. Absolutely no excuse.

Come on TM, be reasonable. They were probably working hard on fixing the bug that prevents them from sending out a message saying, "We are performing urgent bug-fixes, so database responses may be slow for [5 minutes/30 minutes/1 hour/the rest of time]".

    Ahh, Happy Tuesday...

Just found this thread, thought I'd chime in.

Over the weekend, the internet took a major hit, which is apparently still true today On Saturday and Sunday, there were major outages with US based hubs and mobile networks. This accounted for an approximately 25% reduction in connection speeds across the continental US, and the lowest connection speed I'd ever gotten from any device/connection.

    http://www.elilabs.com/internet_status.shtml

I've been searching for any reports or any type of event that could have triggered this event. I was unable to find anything. Apparently Anonymous hacked Sony again, but that would hardly take down internet hubs.

Anyway, consider it a new link/tool for your favorites to analyze more than just the forums. I think that as the world evolves, attacks on other countries internet hubs will increase. It's more fun than real warfare, and probably more impactful to the entire population of a country/region.

I dunno, may not have been purely a server outage causing the slowdown, but could have been the big network issue.

Heaven forbid the world goes without Youtube or Netflix for a few days! Heck, get those two out of the pipes and bandwidth might increase greatly for everyone else on the interwebs.
