Giving reputation points for interesting problems as well as solutions?

Hi All,

Just a question on approach...

It appears that the current usage of "Reputation Points" is limited to those that help...

Would it be permissible to use "Reputation Points" for the person who raises an intriguing/interesting new problem?

I sometimes give rep for solutions and I sometimes get rep for solutions it's particularly satisfying when an onlooker appreciates your work enough to give substance and, hopefully, kudo

Hi Dave

I've given Rep Points for solutions (not MY solutions) to "intriguing/interesting new problems" but not to the OP who has posted the "intriguing/interesting new problem".

Re: Giving reputation points for interesting problems as well as solutions?

I've been random with my doling out of rep points and I've been guarded with them.

I just got a rep hit from someone that was looking at a thread (that wasn't theirs) and seeing my solution. I thought that was totally cool.
If you're happy with someone's help, click that little star at the bottom left of their post to give them Reps.

I give rep points randomly, since they don't mean anything anymore. The only thing that bugs me is that I can't give rep to the same post twice or even 3 times.
Be fore warned, I regularly post drunk. So don't take offence (too much) to what I say.

@Japan Dave - are you sure about that? I've gotten rep twice from one of the Guru's; although I've never tried to award reps more than once myself. (I hope that doesn't mean that they'll take one back.)

Re: Giving reputation points for interesting problems as well as solutions?

You can give reps to whoever you want. If you want to rep a good question, you can (I cant say I have ever done that though). I have also given reps to solutions that I thought were deserving, be they from a novice or a top member, and I must agree that is it very satisfying to receive reps from some-one other than the OP for a solution you have come up with
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Re: Giving reputation points for interesting problems as well as solutions?

It’s nice to get rep and a thank you from the OP but aside from the OP being grateful you realize that most of the time they don’t understand what and how you did it.

Getting rep points from somebody “higher” in the forum hierarchy is more satisfying as you know that you get the rep based on the quality of your work by somebody that can appreciate what you did.

Then of course there is the fact that most of the OP’s can only give you 1 rep point but a forum guru may add 10 or more rep points by clicking on your star but this will of course not be what make you most happy or?

I completely agree with that. The first high rep I got was from romperstomper a couple years back and that made my week at the time. I believe it was because I caught a small error in a code snippet that he didn't immediately catch. He put some pep into my step for that. I think peer rep-giving will always be the most inspiring.

totally agree-I've been fortunate enough to receive rep from daddylonglegs, Andy Pope and Colin Legg which all made me feel pretty darned good for a long time after! I couldn't care less for titles and such but a pat on the back from folk like that? priceless :-)

What I really hate is having worked on a problem and come up with a massive function that's about 200 characters long to have some clever git do the same in three words or less LOL

It's really embarrassing

The original post about interesting questions is valid although I don't think people should get rep for asking questions...

I gave rep the other day to an OP, but not for his question - for the way he responded to the solution (it wasn't my solution and I hadn't subscribed to the thread).

Earlier this week I received rep points from a post I made in August, 2007... FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER! Almost six years removed, that's impressive. (To me, at least)

Been on both sides of that situation, many times.

It's really embarrassing
Awww.... not at all. Be embarrassed when you KNOW BETTER and still do it wrong, not for seeing a shorter answer than you conceived. Shorter isn't always better. Some short array functions might be far less efficient than something more horrendous to the eye.

The INDEX/SMALL/IF array trick we see so often is frequently short enough to read well, but that dog is memory hungry. We can do the same thing with nested OFFSET()s usually, for more efficient, doesn't loop into itself, but is MUCH harder to read. Depends on what the goal is. Short or efficient.
