A question on reputation

So, it appears that the rules have changed. Not that I even come close to qualifiying... But I do have a question regarding giving rep.

I typically give rep to users who help. To me, this means looking and pointing me in the right direction. Not necessarily an answer. Sometimes, just a explanation of a topic will merit a rep point from me.

Is this wrong? Or is this okay?

Re: A question on reputation

I don't think anyone would say that's wrong ussenterprise. All those scenarios to expressed would be considered helpful and therefore can warrant reps being given. That's my opinion on the matter.
If you're happy with someone's help, click that little star at the bottom left of their post to give them Reps.

Re: A question on reputation

Reps are given in appreciation of help given. That help could be in the form of an answer, or it could be advice on where to look for something, or a suggestion on an approach to take. If you feel that a member has helped you in anyway that is of benefit to you, please feel free to add to their rep
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Hope this isn't against the rule about posting in someone else's question. But this is related, does someone who helped me know if I gave them a star?

Re: A question on reputation

@ Sambo kid, considering the nature of this post and its location (the water cooler) no its not against the rules to ask what you did here

And to answer your question, yes the person who receives the rep will know that you rep'd them, all they need to do is click on "Settings" at the top of the page (next to "Log Out"), it lists every-one who has given you reps, as well as (sometimes) a comment left by them

@ ussenterprise, you can look there too, to see who rep'd you - and thanks for the rep, too

Re: A question on reputation

Somehow it looks like I have 11 points but I didn't see how to find who gave me any. I'm shocked I have any. I've been trying to get to forum contributor level and hope to someday be a resource like so many of you on here. BTW, I moved from Hbg PA to FL in 2010 after being a lifelong PA resident. Couldn't take the winters anymore.

@ Sambo Kid...Hbg = Hollidaysburg?

If you take a look at the rules, right down the bottom, you will see the level requirements....

The following is the revised level structure -

Re: A question on reputation

@Sambo_kid: we all start as "Registered Users", and we all progress to other levels at different paces. A lot of users seem to register to ask a question, then never visit the site again, so kudos to you for aspiring to get to the next level.

One of the great things about Excel is that there are so many ways to approach one problem, but that can also make it seem a little daunting, as there can be so much to learn. However, you, and I, and others are in a great place to learn (and - bigger picture - thus help others) as the experts/gurus etc on here have an incredible wealth of knowledge.

Enjoy the trip
Brendan.

1) You can thank any poster by clicking the * at the left of a helpful post.
2) You can help to keep the forum tidy by marking your thread as "Solved", if it has been answered to your satisfaction.
3) Help us to help you, by uploading a sample workbook, showing the type of data you're dealing with, and clearly indicating what the results should be.

No, Hbg = Harrisburg. Yes I was thinking that I needed to hit the 100 posts and wondered if I'd get there.
But as for the reputation points, wasn't sure I'd ever get any.

Yes, slowly progressing toward the 100 mark.
Not too long ago I took an advanced excel users class and ended up teaching the teacher stuff he didn't know. He was teaching from the book and I believe he learned mostly for the book, had some wrong info he was teaching the class that I had to correct. But this forum, WOW, the knowledge of the gurus and contributors is so much. It is an enlightening trip. Thanks.

I see a spot under settings called "Latest Reputation Received" and the points, mine is the second blue box down. Don't see how to see who gave them to me though.

Oh, I have. To check my rep before, I'd click on Add Rep to myself. I had 10 points. (Maybe that was a default?)

I do now see that section. Thank you. :D

Re: A question on reputation

Hello ussenterprise and Sambo Kid,

I notice that neither of you are soliciting rep. When I joined a year and a quarter ago there was no rep in the qualifications for any of the levels. By the way each dark green bar means that you're going for that many 100 rep points. (That you both have one dark green bar means that you're going for your first 100 points.) The light green bars starting at the 6th bar, I think denote 200 point increments. But the rep criterion seems predicated upon 1 rep for two posts. In other words 1 for six doesn't muster. So, I advise you both - when you get to add your signature - to solicit rep there as do so many of the Experts, Guru's etc.
If I've helped you, please consider adding to my reputation - just click on the liitle star at the left.

When some-one clicks on the star for you, you get a rep point, and depending on the level of the member that gives you the rep, you may get more than 1 point. But if some-one clicks on your star, you will get at least 1 point

@ ussenterprise, That is telling you that you hwave tried to use a signature that is longer than 50 characters...try to shorten it a bit

Yes, I was wondering how you add notes to the bottom of your posts too in case I wanted to mention the reps and marking solved as so many do.
I looked through my profile and nothing jumped out at me as to how to do it.

Actually as you cross each level, your signature limit increases too. Thats why Hahobe has a higher signature limit.
If I have helped, Don't forget to add to my reputation (click on the star below the post)
