    ALt,I,R Function not working

    I'm using office 2013

Recently I'm facing a problem in EXCEL while Inserting Row or Column in worksheet.

usually I can add row by giving command Alt + I + R or Alt + I +C for column addition but all of sudden it stopped working.

    Can anybody help me.

Note: When I run excel in safe mode the Alt + I +R command is working.

Are you getting some sort of an error message?

Is there any Array Formula between which you are trying to add a Row?
    Cheers!

I know you can do it. Even I can do it on another system or using safe mode in existing system.

I even uninstalled excel and then reinstalled it but of no use. I don't know why the command is not running in normal mode.

Have you added any add-ins to your system recently? I've heard of add-ins sometimes affecting key combinations and since Safe Mode disables them, that might be the problem?

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

One thing I notice about those of us that use "keyboard shortcuts" like this to access commands is that we seem to be "stuck" with the Excel 2003 versions of the shortcuts. (Aside, is it because we still really prefer the old 2003 and earlier toolbar+menu user interface?). In 2003, alt "activates" the menu, I activates the "insert" menu, and r executes the "insert row" command.

2007 and later also allows you to access the ribbon from the keyboard in much the same way, except that the letters for each group and command necessarily change. Alt still "activates" the ribbon, and displays the key to access each ribbon group. As you press the keys, you should see the available command at each step. So, Alt - H will access the home group, I brings up the Insert menu, and R executes the insert row command (at least in 2007, I don't know if it changes in 2013). As a debugging step, I would try using the key sequence for the current version to see if something is causing the 2003 keystroke "compatibility" function to be turned off, or if it is because you cannot access any commands through the keyboard, or if the insert row command itself has been disabled.

If you have a programmable keyboard, have you taken those keyboard combinations to perform some actions?

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

Thank you so much in helping me to sort out the problem.

I too think of add on related but there is no addon
    No key is programmed
I too googled around and got one post which is still unanswered

when I press only ALT key, it shows menu letters like F,H,N,P,M etc

If anybody want to have online view of the problem, just download "teamviewer" software (free) so that I can give access to you.

Thank you once again for taking your time out. I'm still struck.

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

    Hi,

Alt-I-R is the pre-ribbon keyboard shortcut (i.e. for 2003 versions and before). In ribbon versions of Excel (2007/2010/2013), pressing Alt brings up the letter for a ribbon tab (that's the F,H,N,P,M etc you're seeing). In English versions, Alt-H selects the 'Home' tab, where Insert Row is, so pressing (in sequence) Alt-H-I-R will insert a row.
I know that doesn't fix your problem, but maybe you could just use the new sequence?

There are other ways of inserting a row, which you've probably found yourself by googling round:
    1. Select a row, press Control-Shift-= (or Control-+ using the number keyboard) to enter a row above.
    2. Select a cell, press Control-Space to select that row, then do as above.
    3. Select a cell, press Control-Shift-= (or Control-+), then press the down arrow to select 'entire row' then press Enter to enter a row above.
    4. Select a cell, type /ir which will insert a row above (it's an old Visicalc command) - don't worry, it doesn't overwrite what's in the cell. (/ic will insert a column to the left if you're wondering.)
    5. Write a macro to insert a new row (Selection.EntireRow.Insert is the command), then assign it to whatever key combination you want (see http://wordribbon.tips.net/T008058_A...rtcut_Key.html for how to do that).

Again, I know that doesn't answer your original question, and I'm probably telling you what you already know - sorry.

    Regards,
    Aardigspook

when I press only ALT key, it shows menu letters like F,H,N,P,M etc
Then what happens if you follow through the key sequence (H->I->R) to execute the insert row command?

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

Keyboard shortcuts do change from version to version. Alt I R is from a version previous to 2010 which I use and when I hit Alt I a message pops up "continue the typing the menu key sequence from a previous version of Office". As previously stated the Office 2013 keyboard shortcut for inserting a row is Alt H I R. I have been unable to find out if Alt I R is still available in Office 2013.

Keyboard is not a problem because Alt,H,I,R is working perfectly.
I'm using Office 2013 and same command is working on other system having office 2013.

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

I am not aware of anything (except something in a macro somewhere) that can disable the 2003 menu keys. Since the 2013 key sequences still work so that we know the command itself works, then something has disabled the 2003 version "shortcut" keys.

I'm a late adopter (I was still using Excel 2002 until a year or two ago), so I am well aware that Microsoft does not feel a particular obligation to keep things "backwards compatible". In many ways, I am surprised that they have kept the 2003 menu key sequences active 10 years after 2003. When I did finally "upgrade" to 2007, I decided I had better learn the new keyboard sequences to access the commands I need. I might suggest that, even if you figure out how to re-enable the 2003 keyboard sequences, it would be wise to learn how to navigate using the 2013 ribbon and its keyboard sequences.

I found this with an internet search for "disable excel 2003 keyboard shortcuts in excel 2013": http://www.rondebruin.nl/win/s5/win005.htm I would guess that somewhere along the way, code like this was excecuted that turned off the 2003 keyboard accelerator keys. He suggests code to re-enable them, too. May be worth trying.

    Re: ALt,I,R Function not working

    Thank you MrShorty

You can also use this to reset the menu if the Enable macro is not working.

    Application.CommandBars("&Legacy Keyboard Support").Reset

I created a micro and pasted the above command. After running the same Alt,I,R is running perfectly.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Worked for me.

    enquirer...

    Hi.

It's a forum rule that you start your own thread, rather than "piggy-backing" on someone else's thread. This helps prevent massive confusion arising - which will happen if it is not clear which question is being answered. So please start your own thread and explain your own problem (make sure that, right from the start, you use a meaningful title (NOT things like "help needed" or "urgent problem"... think of the Google search terms that you would use to find the solution).

A picture is worth 1,000 words. An Excel sheet is worth 1,000 pictures. So, prepare a SMALL sample sheet (10-20 rows, not thousands!!!). Make sure there is enough data to demonstrate your need. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary. Remember to remove ALL confidential information first!!!

The yellow banner about sample worksheets, at the top of the screen tells you how to post a sheet here on the Forum.
