VBA to control chart legend entries

Coming along well with my project to select any one of four aspects to display for any combination of 7 individuals but the legend is a nightmare. The legend entries are being retained so even after I delete a series the corresponding legend entry remains. If I add that individual's series back to the chart, a new legend entry is created and the old one remains still. Even if I manually select the entries and delete them, then refresh the chart or remove the legend entirely then bring it back, all those "ghost" entries still appear. Screenshot attached.

Note: Any number or combination of names can be selected, but only one type by the radio buttons can be displayed at any time. The screenshot was after simply checking some of the names on and off several times. Legend entries just kept on accumulating instead of being automatically eliminated when I deleted a series. Do I have to take special action to get rid of an entry? It would seem strange as they were added automatically when I added a series...

What are the rules/tricks/black magic spells used to control legends, or is there a good reasonable programmatically arrived at substitution?
